Merit Scholarships

Most of the students nowadays go into debt and take student loans to attain free tuition fee and cover the necessary expenses for their education. With merit scholarships, your education costs and expenses will be eliminated and will enable you to save money over your desired course. These scholarships are given based on the demonstrated leadership ability, test scores, personal essays, interviews, and academic records. They are usually given out to incoming college or university students with quality academic performance and high grades. They are also made available in sports and the arts other than in academics.

Merit Scholarships cover financial aid grants given to students with academic expertise and excellence. Typically, these awards will not require you for repayment, but come with preconditions on the maintenance of a minimum grade point average.

Merit based scholarships may come from various sources such as a non-profit organization, business enterprise, university, and/or the government. These scholarships are often given to students with strong academic credentials and high average scores in aptitude tests. This means to say that students who meet the academic qualifications offered by their providers.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards the scholarships to students through the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). These scholarships are awarded to students who qualify for Commended Student or Semifinalist status. It notes that there are approximately 4,700 entrants honored annually and select 1,300 semifinalists for the scholarships. The finalists then compete by submitting academic records, essays, and documentation of leadership and activities.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation offers grant money financing the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which honors students who have demonstrated leadership in school activities or community service and those with high academic average scores. To be eligible of this program, you should have an unweighted grade-point average (GPA) with a minimum of 3.3 and should be enrolled full-time in high school.

The scholarship program of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation gives 250 four-year merit scholarships annually. The scholarships are open for application among high school senior students in their final year. They include 200 Regional Scholarship recipients with $10,000 scholarships and 50 National Scholarship recipients with $20,000 scholarships. Qualified applicants for these scholarships should be admitted in high school to be included in the competition for these scholarships.

Four-year university scholarships are intended for university students with high educational aptitude scores. Funds for these awards may come from various sources and may have different names which may depend on the university.

There are also private colleges offering academic scholarships based on merit. One of these colleges is Davidson College, which provides about 10 percent of freshmen. It points out that these awards can be renewed for four years and may have valued from $500 to the entire course payment.

Thanks to merit scholarships, you may now enjoy your salary rather than use it to pay off your loans after completing your studies. They also have long-term benefits after graduation as they show the abilities and capabilities of the graduates to future admission boards and employers.
